Gemsbok, or Oryx, is a large antelope with very long straight or slightly curved horns. Built rather like a polo pony: compact body with sturdy limbs; short stiff neck mane; small dewlap at jaw/throat intersection. The Oryx's ability to survive in waterless areas is second only to that of the Addax among African antelopes. It subsists on coarse desert grasses, browses to some extent, and digs up tubers, roots, and bulbs, filling it water needs with these, along with melons and wild cucumbers in the Kalahari and other sandy soils. We observed Gemsbok in nearly complete isolation wandering the Namib dessert, miles from any water source. |
