The Verreaux's Eagle-Owl, or Giant Eagle-Owl, has heavy black rings outlined by white around the face. They are light sleepers and will drop on any prey that wanders below its daytime perching branch. It feeds early at night on small mammals and also takes many birds, as well as snakes, lizards, toads, fish, and insects.
